Why the Cross?
God's desire for man was that he be holy, pure,
virtuous and filled with love. Yet, instead of the perfection and
holiness of God, man is found to have a corrupt, depraved nature. Even after regeneration, the Christian may have
trouble with a still-active carnal nature. Whatever one may wish to call it-this nature, this spirit, this force is desperately
wicked, unrighteous, unholy and completely evil. Its beginning is in Satan, running down through the course of men on
earth; its final end is in wrath and destruction meted out by a holy God.
The spirit of wickedness was first found in the pride and rebellion of Satan. Then, because of Adam's deliberate
disobedience, the same spirit wedged its way into his heart and the heart of his seed. Finally it accrues to us today and
dominates our life because of the series of choices and decisions made by our ancestors from Adam until now, and
those we ourselves have made during our years of growth and development.
